Eye Disease Diagnosis & Management

Eye Disease Can Cause Permanent Vision Loss

Many forms of eye disease are asymptomatic (meaning they don’t exhibit any symptoms) in their early stages, so you may not even realize something is wrong until you have already begun to experience permanent vision loss.

The most important fact to know about eye disease is that only an eye doctor can detect these symptoms before you start to experience vision loss. By booking an eye exam at least once a year, you can prevent eye disease from damaging your vision.

Types of Eye Diseases

Glaucoma is a collection of different eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, generally due to increased fluid pressure inside the eye. The two most common forms of glaucoma are known as open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma.

  • Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage canal between iris and cornea responsible for cycling fluids out of your eye becomes clogged or partially blocked. This slowly increases the eye’s intraocular pressure, damaging the optic nerve.
  • Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the angle between the iris and cornea closes completely, totally blocking the passage of fluids out of the eye. This type of glaucoma often develops quickly and is considered to be a medical emergency. Symptoms can include sudden blurriness, eye pain, headaches, or even nausea.

Age-related macular degeneration is a common eye disease that generally affects older patients. There are two types of AMD: Dry AMD and wet AMD.

  • Dry AMD occurs when the macula, located near the center of your retina, starts to thin, affecting your central vision.
  • Wet AMD occurs when blood vessels develop underneath and into your macula, leaking blood and fluids that also affect your central vision.

Cataracts are the clouding in your lens as you grow older. The disease can develop as a symptom of genetics or ageing or can develop as a result of eye surgery or medical disease. Cataracts are treatable but can cause vision loss if not looked at by an eye care professional.

Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink-eye” is the inflammation and/or infection of the conjunctiva. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a virus or bacteria,  and when treated correctly will usually clear up quickly.

For Effective Help, Speak to an Optometrist

Eye diseases can cause permanent vision loss if not treated by your eye care professional. Depending on the symptoms and your personal health requirements, your doctor can recommend to you the best options to treat and manage your disease.

The only thing you need to do is to book an appointment with us.
