Digital Eye Strain

How Much Screen Time is Too Much For Your Eyes?

There is no question we are living in the digital age; nearly all of our jobs and interests require at least some time spent in front of a computer or television screen. And even though this newfound availability for digital devices has reached an all-time high, we still need to understand that these devices affect our vision.

Causes & Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain can be caused by focusing for too long on a digital screen and/or reduced blinking. Even your eyes taking in too much blue light from your digital screens can cause a strain on your eyes.

Patients can experience digital eye strain differently than others, but some of the most common irritations stem from itchiness, your eyes being overly watery, or even general redness. Some studies have shown a correlation between myopia and exposure to screens at an early age. By speaking to your optometrist, you can find the right solution for your digital eye strain symptoms.

Digital Eye Strain Treatments

By booking an appointment to see an optometrist, you can get tailored solutions for you and your eyes. Some treatments may include medications and eye drops, but if you are looking for quick relief, you can always try the 20-20-20 rule.

The Canadian Optometric Association recommends the 20-20-20 rule as an easy way to give your eyes relief. Every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to an object about 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This should relax your eyes so you can continue working with a screen.

While the 20-20-20 rule can offer relief, a better solution can be booking an eye exam with our optometrists.
